Why the paper insulation matters
You can replace or recondition transformer oil, but you can't replace the paper on the windings without rewinding. As that cellulose insulation degrades, it releases furanic compounds into the oil. Testing for them shows the degree of degradation of the paper inside the transformer, using an ordinary oil sample.
When to order a furan test
- The transformer is more than 15 years old.
- Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are climbing in your DGA results.
- You are deciding whether to refurbish or replace the transformer.
How furan testing fits with DGA
In dissolved gas analysis, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide point to paper insulation degradation. Rising carbon monoxide with rising furans means the windings are ageing. Reading the two together gives a clearer picture than either test alone.
How we test
We use a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system for precise quantification of furanic compounds, following ASTM D5837. You receive a PDF report by email with the raw data, a trend graph against previous samples on the same unit and a plain-language recommendation.
Sending a sample
A full suite with furans and PCB needs 1.5 litres of oil. Our transformer oil sampling guide covers the valve, container and labelling. Get in touch below for current turnaround times and sample kits.
